Welcome to Baytown Texas

Ever wonder where Geese go for the winter? Goose Creek of course! Actually, the creek was named after their arrival. Goose Creek was one of the three towns - along with East Baytown and Pelly, two early 1900s boom towns - that formed Baytown Texas. The three towns consolidated in 1947, and Baytown as we know it today was established in 1948. Today, we include Beach City, Cove, Mont Belview and Old River-Winfree in our description of Baytown, which are neighboring cities or suburbs.

According to the US Census Bureau, the Baytown real estate area has a population of just over 50,000 and is located 30 miles east of downtown Houston on the Coastal Plains of Texas. Much of the weather in Baytown depends on what’s happening in the Gulf of Mexico. Average temperatures in summer months are in the low 90's with very mild winters, and snowfall is practically unheard of.

Living in Baytown

As one might guess from the town’s name, a number of homes in Baytown are on the waterfront, with their own docks and spectacular views. Contemporary condominiums and patio homes are located in convenient locations, and many developments offer breathtaking views of the bay area and inlets.  Real estate in Baytown offers a wide variety of architectural styles ranging from Tudor, Colonial, Victorian and early American to ranch, Spanish and more contemporary styles.  Many subdivisions are nestled in natural forest settings surrounded by towering pines, oaks and pecans, with several neighborhoods offering greenbelt jogging or walking trails. And, because of the area's subtropical climate, lush green lawns and tropical foliage thrive throughout.

Things To Do

The newest attraction in Baytown is the recently opened Pirates Bay, a Caribbean-themed water park featuring a zero-entry pool and play area for the little ones, along with tube slides and surfing machines for the daredevils.  The local YMCA branch offers summer day camp, teen camp, work out facilities and of course swimming lessons.  There are numerous facilities for sailing, fishing both fresh and salt water, golfing, hunting, and water sports, along with excellent hike and bike trails along the banks of Goose Creek. Baytown has over 40 parks with various features including a sports complex, dog park, skate park and waterfront pavilions for family reunions and birthday parties.  Other points of interest include Evergreen Point Golf Course and the Baytown Nature Center, which reclaimed 400 acres of tidal marsh and wetlands from development after Hurricane Alicia.

For those headed to the bustling business district of downtown Houston, the Harris County Transit Service provides a daily park and ride service to make the drive easier.  And when travel takes you out of the area, Houston Hobby and Bush Intercontinental Airports are about 35 and 45 minutes away, respectively.

Baytown Schools

The public school system is run by Goose Creek CISD. It serves the children of Baytown and Highlands, and neighboring communities near the Texas Gulf Coast. Just a short drive from southeast Houston, GCCISD covers 128 square miles in Harris and West Chambers counties. It includes 14 elementary schools - K-5, 5 junior schools, and 3 high schools, including the new Goose Creek Memorial High School which opened its doors in 2008. The District also supports an Alternative Learning Program and Community Guidance Center.  Baytown takes its sports activities seriously, which is why in 1969 it built the 16,500-seat Stallworth Stadium.  As the home field for Goose Creek ISD high school football, it is one of the largest high school stadiums in Texas.

For those seeking higher education, Lee College can be a great place to start.  A two-year junior college with over 130 degree and certificate programs, it has the distinction of being one of the fastest growing community colleges in the nation.  Of course, students can also drive into Houston to attend the four-year institutions of Rice University, Texas Southern University and the University of Houston, among others.

While Baytown is often known for its industry - and ExxonMobil, among others, has indeed helped make it a major industrial center - the town is still a community first and foremost.  Whether pulling together to help Louisianans after Hurricane Katrina or pitching in to help keep community services open in tough economic times, civic involvement is one of the things that makes this town unique.  Baytown has managed to combine industry and community into a place many simply call...home.
