Welcome to Bellaire Texas

Native Iowan William Baldwin established Bellaire in 1908 from ranch land belonging to Rice University founder William Rice. Named Bellaire (or “good air”) for its temperate breezes, the town experienced a residential boom after World War II, when its population increased tenfold in a mere decade. In 1948 Houston annexed the land around Bellaire, limiting Bellaire to its current size. What remains is a lovely little city with oak-lined streets, tucked in the heart of Houston.

Bellaire is located in the southwest region of Harris County, Texas, with approximately 18,000 residents. This small but pristine town has a total land mass of 3.6 miles and is surrounded by Houston, West University Place and Southside Place. Baseball looms large in Bellaire: their Little League team went to the 2000 Little League World Series and Bellaire High School has won the Texas State Baseball Championship seven times.  Not to mention, the town is home to several current and former major league players.  With its highly educated populace, established neighborhoods and close proximity to downtown Houston, Bellaire is a highly sought-after place to live.

Living in Bellaire

Known as the “City of Homes,“ Bellaire has over 6,000 homes within the city, ranging from 1950’s and 60’s ranch-style homes to newer custom homes and mansions, many priced at $1,000,000+.  In addition to those large oaks arching over the streets, another bonus of Bellaire’s established neighborhoods is larger lots - a typical lot in Bellaire is 75 feet by 130 feet, as opposed to the 60-foot lots seen in many newer developments.  Not surprisingly, that translates to larger homes, detached garages and backyard pools in much of Bellaire‘s real estate.

While most of Bellaire is residential, there are some high-rise buildings located along Loop 610. Major employers in the area include AT&T, CenterPoint Energy, Chevron’s Pipe Line Company headquarters and Frost Bank’s Houston offices.  Of course, downtown Houston and the world-renowned Houston Medical Center are just minutes away, making a short commute for many living in Bellaire.

Things to Do

This family-friendly town boasts an impressive 14 parks, the showcase of which is seven-acre Zindler Park, with baseball and soccer fields, jogging trails, playground, tennis courts and the new Town Square Aquatic Center complete with lap pool, water slides and a splash area for the little ones.  Other parks in the city include amenities such as pools, picnic areas, lighted tennis courts, sports fields and a dedicated dog park. Kids wanting a hands-on way to explore science can do so at the Nature Discovery Center, which has monthly themed exhibits and Smithsonian-style discovery boxes.  No small town would be complete without its own library, and Bellaire’s is located across the street from Zindler Park.  And, of course, families love taking part in the town’s annual 4th of July parades and “snow in the park” holiday celebrations.

Bellaire Schools

The city’s public schools fall under the Houston Independent School District, and students are sent to one of three elementary schools, 2 middle schools and 1 high school. Pin Oak Middle School was recently honored as a National Blue Ribbon School, while Bellaire High School is a magnet school for foreign languages and consistently graduates the highest number of National Merit Scholars in the country.

There are a number of private school options in Bellaire, including the Post Oak School (Montessori, K-8), Veritas Christian Academy (K-8) and Episcopal High School (9-12).  Also, six colleges and universities are within a ten minutes’ drive, including Rice University, Texas Southern University, Houston Baptist University, University of Houston, Baylor College of Medicine and Houston Community College.

Bellaire has grown right along with Houston, and its residents continue to enjoy the perks of adjoining a major city, whether it’s shopping at the Galleria or taking in a football game at Reliant Stadium.  At the same time, though, Bellaire retains its own identity as a close-knit community with a small-town feel, right in the heart of the city.
