Houstonians got a glimpse into downtown living on Saturday, April 16, during the Downtown Home Tour hosted by the Houston Downtown Alliance.
HDA members and nonmembers alike purchased tickets that granted access to dramatic residences with up close and personal views of the downtown skyline. Owners graciously opened up their private residences at the Bayou Lofts, Franklin Lofts, Commerce Towers and the Cash Register Building. Other stops included the Four Seasons Private Residences, One Park Place and the Post Rice Lofts, which served as the Downtown Home Tour headquarters for the event.
Attendees were given walking maps showing the location of each of the properties. The Houston Wave was also on the route to offer those weary of walking the opportunity to…

There are many good reasons to purchase a condominium - the amenities, the community, the simplicity of not having to take care of a yard. For some, it’s about easy access to urban shopping and restaurants. For others, it’s a way to downsize and simplify for retirement. Whatever the reason, condo living can be a great fit for some - as long as you do your homework.
Buying a condo isn’t the same as shopping for a single-family home. You’re sharing walls with other residents, you’re guaranteed to be part of an HOA - and bound by their rules, and your financing might follow different guidelines. Before signing on the dotted line, it’s important to ferret out some key information to ensure your condo purchase is a happy one.

High-rise living has a certain kind of sophistication about it. A doorman greets you as you enter the building. An elevator whisks you up to your sky-high retreat. And your windows look out to a panoramic view of the city.
This is not exactly what first comes to mind when you think of housing in Houston—New York City is more like it. But in fact, Houston has over 50 high-rise condominiums dotted throughout the city.
If you have been dreaming of an abode perched high in the sky, there are properties currently available that won’t break your budget. Many times, potential buyers don’t even consider this type of housing. They think it will be too costly. The idea may sound enchanting, but they think that the condos themselves will be out of their range. It is…

Much has been lately of the shift recently toward American homeowners’ shifting preferences. Real estate experts and market analysts have noted trends towards smaller homes and more walkable neighborhoods. Now add a new trend to the list: urban living. If homeowners prefer smaller spaces and the ability to get around without a car, it would seem to logically follow that urban homes would be the new trend. And buyers have long been paying a premium for downtown real estate. So is the move towards urban living real? And does it hold true for a city like Houston?
The 2010 report on Emerging Real Estate Trends, put out by the Urban Land Institute and PriceWaterhouseCoopers, noted that investment prospects seem much stronger for so-called “smart growth”…

Mixed-use developments are reemerging throughout the country. A mixed-use property is typically a multi-level building that provides residences on the upper levels, while also offering office and retail space. It is essentially a one-stop shop for residents, allowing them to live, work and shop right in their own back yard.
Once a staple of city life, mixed-use buildings were common urban dwellings. During Houston’s bustling beginnings, there were many mixed-use properties around downtown until suburban living took hold. As Houston grew, city dwellers moved into planned residential neighborhoods that now reach far outside the city’s limits.
Recently, mixed-use residential projects have returned to urban areas with properties cropping up in all major U.S.…

America - we certainly love our large open spaces. Our country is big, our roads are big, our portions are big, and our houses are even bigger. However in Santa Monica, CA ‘Olympic Studios’ apartments are telling a different story. Sold out since late 2008, tenants are on a waiting list for these compact, 350 square foot dwellings. With no shortage of space or land in sight, real estate experts are asking themselves one question: why are these Californians craving Manhattan-sized apartments to call home?
These apartments are representative of a larger trend occurring in real estate, downsizing. According to Vincent, “The median size of a U.S. home, which jumped from 900 square feet in the 1950s to 2,277 in 2007, has edged down to 2,161, Census Bureau…
