One of the first questions to come out of any house-hunter’s mouth is frequently “How are the schools?” If you are checking out Houston real estate– and have or are planning to have children – the quality of the area educational system should be a primary concern.
Let’s presume that you have narrowed the home search to a few promising Houston suburbs. Each area offers the property essentials you’re looking for – the right number of bedrooms and bathrooms, proximity to the office, suitable acreage – in the appropriate price range, of course. It’s time to compare schools in concert with Houston real estate.
And in Houston, the educational opportunities are quite encouraging.
Consider that all Houston students in grades 1-11 ranked “at or above the Average National Percentile” in reading, math and language categories, according to the Houston Independent School District’s web site (www.houstonisd.org).
The Texas Education Agency’s Accountability System, which is a method for evaluating school systems with regard to precise “base indicators,” identified just 13 of the city’s 266 schools as unacceptable. This identification is based on student performance on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) and State-Developed Alternative Assessment (SDAA) tests, in addition to dropout and four-year graduation rates (www.houstonisd.org).
Based on this data, one can infer that Houston real estate values will not suffer due to educational setbacks in the near term.
The Houston Independent School District oversees the education of more than 200,000 students and is the seventh-largest public system in the United States. According to the HISD web site, “schools are organized within five geographic regions (North, East, South, West and Central) by feeder patterns composed of specific elementary, middle and high schools,” (www.houstonisd.org).
Detailed information about individual schools and districts is available on the HISD site. Houston also offers many private and parochial educational options for families seeking non-public alternatives.
So if you’re looking to purchase Houston real estate, don’t forget to evaluate the area school system. Educational opportunities, while crucial for your children or future family, can also be important for resale value. And in Houston, the school systems are clearly on solid footing nationally.
