Welcome to Conroe Texas

Named "The Miracle City" after a devastating fire in 1901, Conroe pulled together in the aftermath to rebuild and thrive. The city was incorporated just 3 years later, taking the name of an early lumberman, Isaac Conroe. As demand for lumber grew, so did the town. In the 1930s, the town saw its first red light added downtown, as well as a new courthouse. The Crighton Theatre was built as well - which some 20 years later hosted a performance by a young rock-and-roller named Elvis Presley.

Situated 40 miles north of Houston, Conroe is set on 37.8 square miles and has a current population of approximately 58,000, a 59% increase since 2000.  While the area is known for thick forests of pine trees and its ever-popular recreational Lake Conroe, the downtown area is currently receiving some attention for its revitalization effort.  Recently designated as a Main Street City, the town is promoting arts, entertainment and cultural activities, as well as courting new businesses, in order to create a more prosperous, dynamic downtown.

Living in Conroe Texas

While once strictly a “country” town, growth has meant establishment of more neighborhoods, and a greater variety of homes available. Newer homes are often contemporary or custom ranch style, many priced quite affordably.  The arrival of master-planned communities like Graystone Hills mean residents don’t need to give up modern community amenities to live in the country away from Houston.  Lake Conroe offers some beautiful waterfront properties, from cozy cabins to luxurious custom homes - all with amazing views of the still lake waters.  Those seeking a more rustic life need only go a few miles outside of town.  The wooded areas there have many homes with acreage, whether you want a sprawling country estate, a farm for your horses or simply more room to breathe.

Things To Do

Not surprisingly, recreation in Conroe centers around the beautiful 22,000-acre Lake Conroe.  Located just seven miles southeast of Conroe, the lake offers a variety of water sports, including jet-skiing, boating, swimming and fishing.  Of course, the fun doesn’t end there, as the area boasts a number of natural and man-made sources of recreation.  The Sam Houston National Forest borders Conroe, and the area’s piney woods offer endless hiking, camping, horseback riding and bird watching opportunities.  Or, for those not wanting to don hiking boots, a scenic drive through back country roads offers an easier way to get fresh air, especially when spring and fall breezes come blowing in.

The city offers manmade water fun with a water park and aquatic center featuring lap and leisure pools, slides, diving boards and play structures for the little ones.  The grown-ups will enjoy hitting some holes on one of Conroe’s eleven golf courses, including a newly renovated 27-hole course at the River Plantation Country Club.  Downtown art galleries and antique shops make it easy to while away an afternoon, while great dining, live music and entertainment abound in the evenings.  And, of course, no Texas town would be complete without a rodeo, and Conroe is proud to host the annual Montgomery County Fair Rodeo - the biggest event in the county.

Conroe Schools

Children in the Conroe vicinity are served by the Conroe Independent School District, and have been since 1886 when it was a one room schoolhouse. Now the district has grown to 55 campuses, and last year produced over 3000 graduates from 6 high schools. More importantly, Conroe ISD received an “exemplary” rating from the Texas Education Agency, putting it in the top 20% of school districts in the state.

In the higher education arena, local Lone Star College offers associate degrees and certificate programs in many different fields, including health sciences, computer technology and business.  And for those willing to make the (scenic) 29-mile drive, Sam Houston State University provides a four-year university option for students in this neck of the woods.

With its towering forests, historic downtown and popular lake recreation area, it’s little wonder Conroe has seen such growth in recent years.  Affordable real estate and proximity to Houston simply add to its allure. With big city conveniences and small-town charm, Conroe truly is an urban jewel in the Piney Woods.
