Crosby is a Census-Designated Place or CDP, meaning it is counted as its own concentration of population by the U.S. Census, but is unincorporated. With approximately 1,700 residents, Crosby sits on 2.3 square miles with zero water mass, although a portion of Crosby has the distinction of having waterfront homes on Lake Houston. Although Crosby is 21 miles from Houston, the community is still within Harris County and is served by the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
Living in Crosby Texas
Many new homeowners are finding this place just too hard to resist. Custom homes built on Lake Houston have beautiful waterfront views, while other property is nestled in the trees with horse stables, barns and surrounding acreage. Crosby subdivisions with country club amenities have older wood-frame houses as well as newer homes to choose from. One thing to note is that, unlike other area communities, Crosby real estate has no deed restrictions. While some might prefer the consistency deed-restricted communities provide, others enjoy the chance to get out from under some covenants which seem too restrictive or prohibit homeowners from making a change to their property.
Things To Do
Nearby Lake Houston provides a major source of recreation to Crosby homeowners. Boating and fishing are popular, as are camping and hiking on the north side of the lake. Crosby Park, Community Center and Sports Complex all provide family-oriented fun with softball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, playgrounds, barbecue grills and pavilions - perfect for getting outdoors on a beautiful Texas weekend. Golfers can hit the links at the Newport Golf Club, an 18-hole public course. Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center offers visitors a chance to learn about the environs through hiking and bird-watching, while families can enjoy free catch-and-release fishing on weekends. And, the annual Crosby Fair & Rodeo offers a barbecue cook-off, parade and plenty of live entertainment.
Crosby Schools
Crosby is served by the Crosby Independent School District. This small district with a hometown feel teaches 4,800 students across seven campuses. For those interested in private schools, the Sacred Heart Catholic School offers classes pre-K - 8, and Holy Trinity Episcopal School offers grades K-12. Higher education opportunities nearby include Lee College in Baytown, which offers a wide variety of associate degree and certification programs. San Jacinto College boasts a new culinary arts program and has a campus in Pasadena, about 19 miles away from Crosby.
Since the construction of Highway 90 that stretches into downtown Houston, Crosby has become even more attractive to homebuyers wanting country living with the ability to work in the city. If you want a place where you can spread your arms, grow a few vegetables in your yard, work on restoring a classic car in your driveway, or just not be able to see your neighbor through the dense trees, then Crosby just might be the perfect place to call home.
