Welcome to Cypress Texas

The bustling community of Cypress once saw Atakapan Indians roaming the area, as well as notable stopovers on the banks of Cypress Creek by General Sam Houston on his way to the Battle of San Jacinto and the infamous pirate Jean Lafitte. German settlers arrived after Texas’ Independence, leaving their mark with street names like Telge and Huffmeister. But the area remained rural until the 1960s, when proximity to the new airport and untapped open spaces drove new development in Cypress.

When Houstonians use the name “Cypress,” they may be referring to the small town in the area or, more often, the larger area of Houston known as Cypress-Fairbanks, or “Cy-Fair.”  The town of Cypress reported around 46,000 residents in the 2000 census and has its own zip code, but no mayor or local government of its own.  The larger Cy-Fair area, delineated by the Cy-Fair school district boundaries, encompasses approximately 186 square miles.  So-named because the communities of Cypress and Fairbanks joined forces to create school and fire districts, Cy-Fair is home to over 730,000 residents.

Located approximately 20 miles northwest of downtown Houston along US Highway 290, Cypress has two distinct geographic profiles:  the area north of US 290 is forested and thickly wooded, while the area south of 290 is predominantly ranch land and grassy prairie, dotted with scrub brush and live oaks.

Living in Cypress Texas

With much of the Cypress area’s growth coming in the second half of the 20th century, many of Cypress’ homes are in master-planned communities and neighborhoods, with Copperfield and Fairfield being among the largest.  Even within these communities, home styles and values can vary dramatically - from modest ranch-style homes to sprawling, lakeside custom homes.  It’s not unusual to see signs advertising new homes “from the mid-$100s to $1 million” - all in the same community.

Reasonable land values, nearby major employers like Hewlett-Packard and easy access to major highway arteries, have helped boost the area’s strong growth.  In recent years, commercial development has boomed as well in order to provide close-by services for Cypress residents.  Numerous restaurants and shopping centers dot the area, and the new North Cypress Medical Center provides state-of-the-art medical care just a short drive away.

Things To Do

Cypress is just a short distance from great shopping at the Galleria and downtown Houston’s dining and nightlife, but you don’t have to leave the area to find plenty to do.  Those looking for shopping can find a variety of boutique shops nearby, along with Greenspoint Mall on FM 1960, and the new Premium Outlet Malls near Fairfield on Hwy. 290.  Nearby Champions Golf Club was one of the first major developments in this part of Houston in the late 1950s, and a number of highly-rated golf courses have followed in its path to meet area demand.

High school football is a big deal in Texas, and Cypress is no exception.  Fans can cheer on one of the local school teams at the Berry Center, an $80 million multi-use complex owned by Cy-Fair ISD, featuring a football stadium, basketball arena, conference center, auditorium, multimedia production and catering facility.  Or, for a different kind of sport, horse racing enthusiasts can head over to the Sam Houston Race Park which hosts Class 1 thoroughbred and quarterhorse racing in a 240-acre complex.  The Showgrounds at Sam Houston Park also serve as the location for many concerts and music festivals throughout the year.

And of course, one of the best things to do in Cypress is simply enjoy the surrounding natural beauty.  In addition to the many neighborhood hike-and-bike trails, the Cypress Creek Greenway Project is working on building a series of interconnected trails, bridges, parks and other recreational areas along Cypress Creek so residents can enjoy the benefits of living near the waterway.

Cypress Schools

Cypress is served by Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District, the third largest school district in the State of Texas and one of the fastest growing in the United States.  What started as a one-room school in 1884 on the site where Lamkin Elementary School now stands, has grown into 83 campuses serving over 100,000 students.  Cy-Fair ISD has achieved a “recognized” status from the Texas education agency, and a “superior” rating for financial management.  Twelve of the district’s schools have been recognized over the years as National Blue Ribbon schools, and graduates of Cy-Fair’s eleven high schools consistently have test scores and college enrollment rates that exceed state and national averages.
Of course, private schools are certainly an option as well.  The area has a number to choose from, including St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School , a K through 8th campus with 530 students, Cypress Christian School, a K through 12th school with 560 students, and Rosehill Christian School, a pre-K through 12th interdenominational school in nearby Tomball.

The Lone Star College Cy-Fair campus serves more than 12,000 students and offers a wide range of workforce certificate programs, as well as coursework for university transfer or simply leisure learning.  Area students also attend Houston’s many higher learning institutions, including Rice University, the University of Houston, Texas Southern University, Houston Baptist University or Baylor College of Medicine.

What started as a watering hole for travelers’ horses and small German settlement, has blossomed into a thriving community, a heartbeat away from downtown Houston but still with an identity all its own.  With recreational and educational opportunities for the entire family, and surrounding natural beauty, it’s no wonder so many people have decided to call Cypress home.
