According to a recent report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Houston continues to be among the nation's leaders in terms of job growth.
Analysis of the Labor Department's data conducted by the Houston Business Journal's On Numbers division revealed the city added 267,400 retail jobs between June 2006 and June 2011, representing a 7 percent growth rate.
These figures place Houston in the top-three cities in terms of retail job growth. Furthermore, five of the top-six cities are based in Texas, according to the report.
While the high ranking is positive news for the city, it's growth has slowly lately. Between 2010 and 2011, the region's retail sector grew by 2.06 percent, which placed Houston in the middle of the pack of the 100 metro areas analyzed by the company. During this period, McAllen-Edinburg topped the list with a growth rate of 11.8 percent, followed by Austin at 11.4 percent. San Antonio was fourth at 4.1 percent.
The greater number of jobs available in the Houston region has directly affected the region's real estate market. With more residents employed, sales of Houston properties have risen, while median prices have also increased.
